The Western Australian art-band ensemble CASSIS brings a reality check to the landscape of human emotion. While it has become de rigueur to describe music, film and literature as “European-style art”, the classification cinematic musik-poetica claimed by CASSIS is more than a fashionable label or a simple nod to artistic fusion. It has a sparse, languid soundscape, anchored by a distant and restrained rhythm section, providing a moody canvas for Véronique Ramén’s shimmering vocals. Layered hues of keyboard and guitar give the single I Killed a Man (Am I Worthy of Love?) an atmosphere at once intimate and cinematic. The song binds the listener to a universal story—an emotional mirage of pared-back beauty.
